Psychiatric Symptoms and Dual Diagnosis

There are many symptoms of mental health disorders that can trigger the type of alcoholism that can lead to an eventual dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis simply means that you have been diagnosed with both a psychiatric disorder and an addiction disorder at the same time. Drug and alcohol abuse often go hand in hand with the mental health problems that are associated with depression, mania and anxiety.

Symptoms of depression that can cause alcoholism are:

  • Feeling that all is lost
  • Feeling powerless and helpless
  • Loss of interest in daily activities
  • Inability to experience pleasure
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Loss of energy
  • Strong feelings of guilt
  • Low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness
  • An ability to concentrate

Symptoms of mania that can lead to alcoholism are:

  • Feelings of extreme irritability
  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Unrealistic or grandiose beliefs
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Increased energy
  • Racing thoughts and rapid speech
  • Impulsivity
  • Impaired judgment
  • Hyperactivity
  • Rage and anger

Symptoms of anxiety that can trigger alcohol abuse are:

  • Feeling restless or jumpy
  • Extreme tension or worry
  • Racing heart beat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Trembling
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Trouble concentrating

Alcoholics like to self-medicate and alcohol is able to treat most of these symptoms of common psychiatric orders quite promptly. However it is not long before alcohol becomes an inefficient treatment for these disorders and makes them worse. That is when it is time to seek out treatment for co-occurring disorders where the alcohol abuse rehab problem and the mental disorder are treated at the same time.

A good treatment team will provide you and your family with education about dual diagnosis, help the addict develop recovery goals, supply a medically supervised alcohol detox and supply follow-up treatments and programs for when the addict is released.
