When you go to a treatment center that offers a Twelve-Step Recovery Program you are going to hear some prayers. Some of them you will hear every day and at the beginning or conclusion of group meetings. Some you will be advised to say every night as a way of facilitating your healing.
The number 1 Prayer used at the 12 Step Treatment Center is the Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference
Living one day at a time
Enjoying one moment at a time
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen.
However for expediency’s sake it has become a habit for people to just say the first two lines of this famous poem by Reinhold Neibuhr and then say Amen.
One often used prayer at almost any treatment center is the St. Francis Prayer
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope; that where there are shadows, I may bring light that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.
Another one of the most popular treatment center prayers, just simply because it is about resignation of one’s flaws to a spiritual flaw is called the Seventh Step Prayer.
My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here to do your bidding. Amen. Even the most hardened of individuals find solace in the prayers said at some of these treatment centers and keep saying them as par t of their daily regimen long after treatment is over.
