Not everybody is comfortable with the religious sentiments expressed in the typical Twelve-Step Alcohol Programs. Many of these programs are based on the practices of Alcoholics Anonymous which recommends that control of the disease be resigned into the hands of a “higher power as we know it.” Not everybody agrees with this approach to recovery due to religious, spiritual or philosophical reasons.
Thankfully there are all kinds of alcohol rehab programs across the U.S. that used as referrals by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. The AMA does not recommend specific programs. Usually alcohol rehab treatments that are described as alternative or holistic in nature are the ones that do not practice the twelve-steps.
The top three non 12 step alcohol addiction rehab programs (in no particular ranking of excellence) are –
Challenges – This program is focused on holistic approach that helps the individual learn how to recognize destructive drinking patterns and what triggers their urge to drink. This is one of the most upscale of all alcohol rehab center facilities, alternative or not, and includes posh apartments and day trips to beaches and shopping malls. The length of the program is 30 to 120 days.
Malibu Horizon – This is highly praised among inpatient alcohol program rehabs. Located in Malibu California, the clinical team uses nutrition, psychotherapy, working out, hiking and medication to treat the recovering alcoholic in a period from 28 to 90 days.
St. Gregory Retreat Center – This retreat (that is partnered with the Mayo Clinic) is in Iowa. It uses scientifically based alcohol rehab treatments such as cognitive behavior training and sports physiology to help the patient change his or her patterns and adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is noted for being cheaper than most alcohol addiction rehab programs and the treatment lasts eight weeks.
If you are uncertain about any alcohol rehab treatment programs protocol you can always research them online or give the facility a call to see exactly what the program is about.
